FISHERS on the Myall River are experiencing "an above average prawning season" so far according to chairman of the commercial fishermen's co-op Ross Fidden.
"As the season comes to an end in May to June we will be able to determine if it was a bumper season," he said.
The predominant prawn in Myall River is the school prawn and Mr Fidden said the Myall school prawns were among the best quality in the state.
Commercial fishers from as far north as Taree gathered at Tea Gardens last week to secure their place in the prawn ballot which takes place on the day of the full moon each month - it is said the prawns become active on this day each month.
The ballot was introduced in the 1930s to give everyone an opportunity to place their nets on the best night and in the prime locations along the 20 kilometre stretch from Tea Gardens to Tamboi.
"The best nights for prawning are generally the fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eight and ninth nights after the full moon," Mr Fidden said.
