Action aplenty at the Festival

27 Nov, 2008 10:21 AM
THE Myall River Festival was a great success for the Myall Koala and Environmental Support Group who gave away 200 native plants, stacks of fridge magnets, sold fluffy koalas and drew the raffle prizes.

Winners were Jan from Raymond Terrace and Kieren from Hawks Nest.

Thank you to Rob and Kim from Bombah Point Eco Cottages for donating our first prize.

The Native Animal Trust Fund (NATF) had a good day with their recruitment drive and, as a result, ran a two day training course in Hawks Nest the following weekend.

Two of our members attended, along with three others from the community.

They are all now trainee wildlife rescuers.

Wildlife carers and rescuers are still much needed and if you can help, ring NATF on 0418 628 483.

Just as we were packing up, we received a rescue call.

Two koalas had fallen 10m from a tree in Bowral St Hawks Nest.

Being the mating season, our local icon Louis had pushed his luck, and Lilly, a little too far.

The branch broke and they both plunged to the ground.

By the time we arrived, Lilly was back up the tree and Louis was lumbering across the ground whereupon he climbed an adjacent tree, drew has head up and bellowed loudly.

No rescue was needed.

The Land and Environment Court hearing on the Brancourt land in Kingfisher Avenue started on Monday, November 10, in Moira Pde.

About 65 people attended and 10 people gave verbal evidence in support of retaining a viable wildlife corridor.

It was gratifying the court commissioners got to see a koala on the site, on the day.

At this point the hearing has been adjourned to January 19 so it will be some time before a decision is handed down.

We have a wonderful group of conservation volunteers working in Hawks Nest until February.

In addition, the Barker College boys are in town this week for their summer camp.

They will be spending three days doing bush regeneration as part of the community service component of their visit.

Led by Christian Patteson, our group will be working alongside the boys.

Ian gave a talk at Tea Gardens Public School in November, showing videos of our koalas.

Members of the Red Cross Junior Support Group raised $215 to buy koala food trees.

Each tree will have a name tag of the student who purchased it.

The trees will be planted on the riverside of the road between Jimmy’s Beach and Winda Woppa.

We have had 189 koala sightings this month.

Thank you to all those who rang the koala sightings hotline on 4997 0878.

The next meeting of the group will be our Christmas barbecue on the waterfront opposite the Tea Gardens Hotel on Tuesday, December 16, at 6pm.
