DURING the course of Term 3, three BCS students initiated community service projects to participate in the 2006 Energy Australia Youth Challenge.
This is the first year the school has participated in the competition and the students began with two projects.
Project 1 - Fundraising Initiative: Headed by Sarah Clouten of Year 11, this project raised a total of $640 to be used to purchase seating for the main street of Bulahdelah.
Sarah led a team of dedicated Year 11 students, who together as a group coordinated an out of school uniform day with a National Rugby League theme, sausage sizzle, marble guessing competition, cake stalls and a Father's Day competition with 12 major and minor prizes.
The Year 11 team completed their goal and Sarah was invited to the Bulahdelah launch of the new tourist map for the area with members of the Bulahdelah Chamber of Commerce and Tourism.
Although this fundraising project did not win overall, Sarah received an honorable mention at the award ceremony for her ongoing drive and ability to motivate her team.
Project 2 - Bulah Breaky Boys: Guy Higgins (Year 9) provided the right pizzazz and motivation to keep his team on the ball all term.
Working closely with Josh Gilbert and with help from James Jenkins, both from Year 9, the boys put together a multimedia presentation that would rival any competition.
The team developed signage, brochures, photo collogues, a website and informative DVD presentation to showcase work of our breakfast club volunteers.
The aim of the project was to develop awareness of the breakfast and social program operating at Bulahdelah Central School and improved student participation.
The Bulah Breaky Boys project received the runner-up for the region/rural award in the national competition and Guy Higgins also received an honorable mention for his efforts as team leader.
On September 18, Guy Higgins, Josh Gilbert and Sarah Clouten were accompanied by Mrs Guthrie and Mrs Gilbert to the 2006 Energy Australia Youth Challenge Awards presented at the Power House Museum in Sydney.
Whilst at the award ceremony the students and teachers had the opportunity to meet and interact with Big Brother personalities Greg Logan (2006 winner), housemates Krystal and Gaelyn, Channel V presenter Steven Burke "Burko", NSW Youth of the Year Kate Brannon and music group RAEN.
Participating in the award has given the students an opportunity to challenge themselves, give back to their local community, interact with people they would otherwise not have a chance to meet, break stereotypical moulds, develop leadership skills, work with members of the community outside of the school, enjoy the company of fellow students and teachers, learn the value or respect and tolerance for all people and mature and grow as individuals.
