Bears bring hope

21 Nov, 2006 08:46 AM
HOPE Bears Charity is urgently seeking knitting enthusiasts within our region to volunteer to help cancer patients.

This charity was formed in 2002 and offers cancer sufferers knee rugs, slippers, hats, chemo caps, mittens, gloves, knitted toys/animals and knitted Hope Bears.

They currently supply 60 hospitals, two Ronald MacDonald Houses and Camp Quality.

Founder and public relations officer for Hope Bears Charity, Frances Robinson, said it is very rewarding to know that these wonderful cancer patients appreciate the caring and kind thoughts placed into the items knitted or crocheted for them.

"So tell a friend or neighbour that we desperately need more volunteers to knit, free patterns are supplied," Ms Robinson said.

As well as individuals, craft groups are being called upon to become involved in the project by knitting signature teddies with 'hope' written on the bear's chest.

Patients receiving Hope Bears give their new friend a name and their teddy is always there beside them giving comfort, joy and love.

"With more volunteers we can reach more cancer patients," Ms Robinson said.
