Fifteen young girls from North Sydney spent four days and three nights in the Myall Lakes National Park as part of their Duke of Edinburgh challenge.
The girls started their 40km trip along the Myall River at Tea Gardens on Monday, October 8, and finished in Bulahdelah on Thursday, October 11.
Bulahdelah resident, Mike Lynch, met his granddaughter, Laetitia Lynch, who was part of the group completing the course, at the end of her trip.
“It’s a relief that it is over, but it’s sad that we are not going to do it again,” Laetitia said.
The canoe trip, taken by the girls on the Myall River, was the adventure part of their gold award. Three leaders from Southbound accompanied the girls on the trip however; it was up to the girls to navigate their way along the river and find the campsites.
“The award is a great experience,” participant, Emma Pendleberry said.
“You normally wouldn’t get the chance to camp and make nutritional food in the bush.”
There are three levels in the program: bronze, silver and gold.
Participants must be involved through community service, physical recreation, skills and an adventurous journey.
The girls attend Monte Sant’ Angelo Mercy College in North Sydney.
