TEA Gardens Public School students put on a parliamentary opening that would rival most sittings in the bear pit on Friday.
The 20th official opening of the school’s parliament coincided with a reunion of more than 180 former students and staff.
Member for Paterson, Bob Baldwin and Member for Port Stephens, Craig Baumann plus a host of Department of Education representatives, parents, grandparent and former students sat in on the lively sitting.
Students from all years joined in some engaging debate putting motions forward about play equipment, sound systems and an innovative way to combat bullying whilst helping out charity.
The school’s first Governor General and former principal, Daryl Martin said it was good to see the parliament remained a strong voice for the children.
“Twenty years ago we were unique. No other school in the area had a parliament and we became a model for other schools around the state,” he said.
“It is wonderful to see the parliament still going. The parliament brings responsibilities, and it’s not just up to the ministers but the members as well. Make sure you do express yourself as a voice of the children.”
Current principal and Governor General Sue Estens oversaw the opening, her sixth, said it was the biggest opening yet.
“It’s huge and it’s entrenched as a part of what we do and it doesn’t rely on any one teacher or student.”
After the sitting visitors tucked into some treats while perusing old photos and admission books.
Organiser of the Friday night school reunion, Jan Winn, said students past and present had a wonderful time sharing old school tales.
“Considering a lot of people couldn’t come because of the weather, the turnout has been very good. We sent out hundreds of invitations and received around 180 responses. It’s been a wonderful response.”
