Closed to campers

THE National Parks and Wildlife Service plans to take advantage of the lower numbers of campers at Myall Lakes National Park over next few months and will temporarily close a few camping areas over winter to allow for natural rehabilitation.

NPWS Hunter Region Manager, Robert Quirk said during the cooler months visitation is reduced and there is little demand for a lot of campsites, so it provides a good opportunity to rest some camping grounds and allow for natural rehabilitation to occur prior to the busy summer months.

"Myall Lakes National Park currently provides 21 camping areas and offers a diverse range of camping experiences.

"The Plan of Management for Myall Lakes National Park identifies that sites are to be rested on a rotational basis to allow for the recovery of grasses and other vegetation," explained Mr Quirk.

"This will ensure sites remain grassed and are at their optimum for busier times such as the spring and summer holiday period," he said.

Mr Quirk said four camping areas would be temporarily rested from June 26 to September 25 2006.

"The areas include Mungo South Camping Area, White Tree Bay Camping Area, The Wells Camping Area and Stewart and Lloyd's Camping Area."

Mr Quirk said times of reduced visitation in the park also provides a good opportunity to undertake park maintenance and other project works, which are extremely important in protecting the public facilities and allow for camping areas to be rested and maintained.

"We also use it as an opportunity to maintain the new infrastructure we have built over recent years and undertake pre-season hazard reduction works,'' concluded Mr Quirk.

Banksia Green Camping Area and Dee's Corner Camping Area remain open for camping during this time, and visitors are permitted to have wood fires at these locations over the winter.

Mungo Brush north camping area remains open, although wood fires are not permitted at this location.
