Community support for local leukaemia patients

11 Apr, 2006 10:02 AM
HUNDREDS of local residents are expected to be taking part in the Leukaemia Foundation's national fundraising event, "World's Greatest Shave" (May 4 to 6).

Local community member, Mrs Andrea Priestley, has pledged to help raise funds for the care and aid of people living with leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma, and will be hosting a public shave event and family fun day at Bulahdelah's historic Plough Inn.

With the support of the Inn's Marketing and Events Officer, Ms Anne-Marie Barry, the afternoon will involve activities such as face painting, temporary tattoos, a barbeque, a live event, as well as the shave and colours.

"The local community gains a great sense of satisfaction from becoming involved in this widely recognised event.

"They have been able to see the benefits to patients and families locally, with funds raised contributing towards the introduction of a Support Services Coordinator and Patient Transport Service in the Mid North Coast region," said Mrs Priestly.

Nationwide, there is an anticipated 100,000 Australians shaving or colouring their hair this year.

In 2006, the Leukaemia Foundation World's Greatest Shave hopes to raise $3.2 million in NSW/ACT alone, and this will greatly assist in supporting the 21 Australians diagnosed with leukaemia's, lymphomas and myelomas each day.

World's Greatest Shave is a fun and daring way for you to raise money and support patients and their families, so they can focus on what's most important - getting better.

Funds raised will ensure the Leukaemia Foundation continues to improve patients and families quality of life through personalised and practical care.

The money raised will also fund cutting edge research into better treatments and cures, helping to improve survival rates for adults and children.
