Hawks Nest developer Hanna Abdullah has just been granted approval by Great Lakes Council to begin construction of a small shopping complex in the town.
Mr Abdullah had been waiting for approval for the projects go-ahead after original plans to build a three-storey centre with six shops, a number of residential apartments and an underground car park proved too costly to build.
The new complex will instead feature five shops and two residential apartments, in a smaller two-storey building.
Acito's Café owner Natalie Foley, whose business is right next door to the site, said the development would provide a much-needed boost for Hawks Nest.
"There are less and less businesses in Hawks Nest these days," she said.
"It's great to put a lot of energy into Tea Gardens, but a bit more is needed this side of the river.
"It's great that John (Hanna) is trying to put some life back into the town."
Mr Abdullah will start work on the project within the next few weeks and hopes to have the facility completed within five months.
"We'll be employing all local workers to do the job," Mr Abdullah said.
"We brought the land to rebuild and we're looking to maybe do some more development at sites around Hawks Nest in the future."
Mr Abdullah, originally from Sydney, has moved his young family to Hawks Nest and hopes to set up home in one of the residential units above the complex.
