Cr Chadban returned as Great Lakes mayor

03 Oct, 2006 01:23 PM
TWELVE months on from one of its greatest periods of turmoil, the matter of electing a mayor and deputy mayor to carry Great Lakes Council forward for the next 12 months was dealt with swiftly and harmoniously last week.

This year's election of mayor and deputy mayor was far removed from the power struggle that plagued council for six weeks last year and ultimately was only resolved when the Minister for Local Government, Kerry Hickey intervened and reappointed Cr John Chadban as mayor.

Just one nomination was received by general manager Keith O'Leary for the position of mayor, that being the incumbent Cr Chadban. He was re-elected mayor without the need for a ballot.

"I am tremendously pleased and delighted," Cr Chadban said upon being re-elected for his twelfth term as mayor.

"I always feel pleased to be able to serve the community in this position on council and I am delighted with how we arrived at this result. The focus on this position is finished and we are moving onto what we are here to do. I hope now that we can move on as a collective team to deal with issues as they arise. It is not about just one player, it is a team game. That is what we always need to remember."

Having launched a challenge to the mayor's position last year, with Cr John Stephens at the time looking to gain election as deputy mayor, Cr Len Roberts was quick to congratulate Cr Chadban and explain why there had been no opposition this year.

"You could say it is a numbers game, but at the same time it is easy for other names to be put up (in terms of nominations for the position of mayor) as a token resistance," Cr Roberts said.

"There are ideological differences amongst councillors from time to time but we are looking forward to the next year as a united council and making sure that we make a difference for the ratepayer."

A similar scenario played out with the election of deputy mayor. Cr Jan McWilliams was the only nomination for the position and was duly returned for her fifth consecutive term.

"I would like to thank the staff who have stood behind us strongly for the whole year. I would also like to thank my fellow councillors; we have got over our problems and are now a team that is united," Cr McWilliams said.
