A RESERVE at Hawks Nest is to be named after a woman who was a driving environmental force within the community.
Great Lakes Council has adopted a proposal from the Myall Koala and Environment Support Group that the reserve be named "Jean Shaw Koala Reserve".
The council accepted that Mrs Shaw warranted official recognition for her tireless and persistent involvement with the environment and community in Hawks Nest.
As well as catching, tracking and helping koalas, she also rescued sick and injured animals.
Through her involvement with koalas for 15 years she had become known as "the koala lady".
The council reserve is on a corner of Ibis, Albatross and Kingfisher Avenues at Hawks Nest.
It was adopted by the Myall Koala and Environment Support Group which undertook weed removal, regeneration work and extensive tree planting in an effort to protect and encourage the dwindling local koala colony which lives within the reserve.
