Dragon boats on the Myall

03 Oct, 2006 01:25 PM
BOMBAH Point near Hawks Nest looks set to become the hub of dragon boat racing in the state and at the same time help promote breast cancer awareness.

EcoPoint Myall Shores Resort has taken up sponsorship of the Australian Dragon Boat Federation (AusDBF) and Dragons Abreast Australia (DAA), a separate organisation set up to focus on breast cancer awareness.

The move will bring the dragon boat racing fraternity to Myall Lakes, with EcoPoint Myall Shores Resort being a 'preferred destination' for this energetic, happy and health-oriented group of sports enthusiasts.

"We couldn't be more pleased to offer our resort to such an inspiring group," Myall Shores Resort's general manager James Gardner said.

"We are working with National Parks & Wildlife to ensure the use of dragon boats on the Myall Lakes fits in with our commitment to maintain the pristine natural environment at the resort."

As well, the resort will be offering this unique teambuilding and de-stressing activity to conference groups.

Exhilarating, invigorating and physical, dragon boat racing is gaining popularity with companies as a means to enhance bonding, build team spirit and extend corporate pride through staff membership and intra- and inter-corporate challenges.

Michelle Hanton, AusDBF marketing director and DAA national coordinator, said dragon boating is perfect for team building.

"There's no room for egos in dragon boats, there are 22 crew and each member has to operate in unison as part of the team," she said.

You may know of Michelle Hanton, the inspiring founder of Dragons Abreast in Australia. She and her team of dragon boaters were the topic for an ABC television Australian Story documentary.

The television crew recorded them through a gruelling dragon boat marathon in the Kimberley's, and told of how this unconventional form of therapy for breast cancer started.

From a medical study into the effects of upper body exercise on the incidence of lymphedema, a global movement of dragon boating women has blossomed.

Today, Dragons Abreast are heavily involved in the spectacular dragon boat races at Sydney's Darling Harbour during Chinese New Year and events staged around the National Breast Cancer Foundation's Pink Ribbon Day.
