AFTER satisfying all statutory needs associated with council, water and fire services with revised planning, The Lodge signed contracts on February 26 to extend the facility from 10 to 23 resident beds, to cater for the increasing needs of the community it services in the Great Lakes, Gloucester and Taree regions.
The original concept for The Lodge started in 1983 when the local Meals on Wheels service was established at Hawks Nest.
In 1984, enthusiastic members of the local RSL Sub-Branch began the acquisition of land suitable for the purpose.
In 1986, the RSL and Community Retirement Association was established and members from this association formed the management committee who were successful in obtaining a lease on the land The Lodge now occupies.
In a magnanimous gesture, the RSL Sub-Branch donated 75 per cent of the proceeds from the disposal of its Tea Gardens' club rooms and bowling greens towards this community project that commenced in December 1991 and was completed in May 1992. The first hostel residents were received in June 1992.
Subject to usual variations in the weather, it is anticipated that the project will be finished and ready for new residents by October this year.
If you have been thinking about a move to The Lodge, now is the time to make those initial enquires to Christine Makila on 4997 0767.
This expansion is the first since The Lodge was originally built, and as expected, demand for aged care will grow over the coming years and the design will permit further expansion whilst still retaining the 'big family' environment for which The Lodge prides itself on.
