Fatality free roads

ROADS within the Manning-Great Lakes Police Local Area Command were fatality free over the Easter long weekend, but motorists are still failing to heed the warnings.

Operation Tortoise, the state's Easter road safety campaign, began at midnight on Thursday and ended at midnight on Monday, with double demerit points applying for all speeding and seatbelt offences during the five-day operation.

Manning-Great Lakes Police were out in force over the five days, which saw:

* 1591 breath tests conducted,

* 5 motorists charged with drink driving offences,

* 213 motorists detected exceeding the speed limit,

* 22 motorists charged with other traffic offences,

* 3 vehicle occupants detected not wearing seatbelts,

* 89 infringement notices issued for offences other than traffic offences.
