"SCRAPE-the-bowl" and "dirt-under-the-fingernails learning" is being introduced to Bulahdelah Central School with the establishment of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program.
At the heart of the program will be a productive garden and a kitchen where the children in years three to six will cook the produce they have grown and sit together to share a healthy meal.
Primary deputy principal and kitchen garden program co-ordinator Sally Thompson said she was excited to have the school selected for the program.
"It blew us out of the water, it is really sought after, only a few schools get it each year," she said.
"It is certainly one of the most exciting things I have experienced in more than 30 years of education."
The garden needs to be started from scratch but Ms Johnson said she hopes they will be harvesting by the end of second term. An information night about the new Kitchen Garden Program will be held on Thursday, February 23 at 1.30pm in the staff common room at Bulahdelah Central School. Help will be needed in the form of construction and trades assistance, garden and kitchen equipment, volunteers for working bees, and volunteers to work with small groups in the kitchen and garden classes.
"The volunteers role is so crucial to the success of the program," Ms Johnson said.
