Four wheel driving for fun and funds

01 Nov, 2006 11:46 AM
A NEW 4WD event aimed at people who buy four-wheel drive or all wheel drive vehicles but never take them out of the suburbs has been organised to raise funds for the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund (www.arhrf.org.au).

The event, known as the ARHRF 4WD Round Up, will take place over three days from Friday, March 23 to Sunday, March 25 2007.

The Round Up will start from Goulburn in the Southern Tablelands and finish on the beach at Hawks Nest.

The ARHRF 4WD Round is open to anyone who owns a 4WD or AWD vehicle as well as their families and friends.

It will be a fun filled adventure using use little known bush tracks, forestry roads and private properties.

The CEO of the ARHRF Joy Gillett, in announcing the new event, said many city residents purchased a 4WD with the intention of one day taking an adventure holiday to discover the Australian bush and the Round Up would provide a wonderful opportunity to have this experience.

"As one in five new vehicles is a 4WD or AWD I believe the event will attract a large field of entries.

"The cost to enter is a tax deductible donation to the ARHRF of at least $3,500 so it is an affordable event" said Joy Gillett.

"The Round Up is also a great way to raise funds to allow the ARHRF to continue its work in Mental Illness" said Joy.

Since it was founded in1980 the Fund, which annually allocates over a million dollars towards medical research in Australia, has become recognised as one of the most important private medical research organisations. Previous research initiatives funded by the ARHRF include Cot Death, Problems of the Aged, Adolescents and families, Ross River virus, bowel cancer, and Pre-Hospital / Emergency Care.

Starting in Goulburn the Round Up route will take participants along minor roads and bush tracks to Oberon for lunch, then across country to Mudgee for the first overnight stop.

The following day the event will travel through some great 4WD country to Merriwa for lunch and then a trip through the Barrington Tops to overnight at Gloucester.

The final day includes a visit to the stunning Ellenborough Falls, lunch at Wingham and a drive along the beach to the finish line at Hawks Nest.

Experienced event organisers John Flower and Peter Longhurst will run the ARHRF Round Up.
