Galleries in the Gardens sparks statewide interest

16 Dec, 2009 09:24 AM
AN innovative Myall Coast art project that’s caught the eye of neighbouring communities, has just scored government funding.

Galleries in the Gardens, a project instigated by the Myall Coast Arts Network, will benefit from $5000, from the NSW Government’s Small Chambers of Commerce Fund.

Chairperson of the network, Jen Nichols said the funding will go towards the cost of marketing materials and signs.

“This project will help improve the cultural identity of our village by helping local artists exhibit and sell their work, and help stimulate the local economy,” Ms Nichols said.

Member for Port Stephens Craig Baumann was so impressed with the project he took the concept to the legislative assembly public works committee. He is now working on initiating and funding projects similar to Galleries in the Gardens statewide.

The committee is investigating culture and arts funding for projects across the State.

“With 90 per cent of funding spent in the city of Sydney, more funding sources are needed outside this single electorate. These projects are difficult to operate on a shoe string,” Mr Baumann said.

“My eyes bugged out when I saw what has happening in Tea Gardens. You can look at art while you have tea and a scone and it generates business for local artists.”

Opening just over a month ago, Galleries in Gardens has attracted more attention than organisers could have hoped for. Over 60 pieces of art have been sold to date; generating business not only for local artists, but for businesses exhibiting the work.

Chair of the committee Graeme Hewett said it had been a great success.

“The committee is really excited about the wonderful response and interest we have had from everyone,” he said.

“Us oldies are like kids jumping around.”

The venture was officially opened on the October long weekend, and has since exhibited the work of over 30 local artists in conjunction with businesses in Myall St and along the waterfront of Tea Gardens.

A courtyard exhibition is also held every Saturday at Tea Gardens Hotel Motel.
