Graffiti busted on the Myall Coast

12 Mar, 2009 08:13 AM
ANYONE who has ever talked with Ted Bickford about graffiti knows that he is a passionate man. Not satisfied with just cleaning up Forster and Tuncurry, the graffiti buster now has crews working on the Myall Coast.

Ted is distributing anti-graffiti kits for individuals and groups who are interested in combating the problem in their part of the Great Lakes.

Made up of completely biodegradable products include graffiti removing chemicals, scours, rags, face masks and instructions, Ted estimates the kits are worth around $250.

“The biggest problem is that people just don’t have the right material or they don’t know how to use it.”

The new kits will be used by the Tea Gardens graffiti busters on hotspot areas like the skate park, public toilets, the Hawks Nest dressing and under the Singing Bridge.

The Hawks Nest Surf Club is also onboard and has painted its newly erected murals with anti-graffiti paint to deter culprits.

Ted’s work in Forster and Tuncurry has drastically reduced the rate of graffiti attacks on private and commercial property, something he is trying to mirror on the Myall Coast.

“In Forster and Tuncurry nothing stays up for more than 24 hours. I get it off as quickly as I can,” he said.

“I see it as being a broken window syndrome, if one is broken then others will be targeted. I have absolutely zero tolerance for any kind of graffiti, whether it be Jill loves Bill or what, it’s all graffiti. But what you really need to do is get the kids on side.”

The graffiti buster said local kids need to be informed about the process. “There really needs to be a voluntary person willing to speak with the kids and communicate to them the impacts of graffiti on personal property and businesses,” he said.

“What we’ve got to get is a committee of four or five kids who will take responsibility and let us know when and where this is happening.”

Ted says he is not interested in the persecution of the culprits, he just wants to know where the graffiti is so he can get out and remove it quickly.

If you spot graffiti on any private property call the Graffiti Buster hotline on 0408440309.
