Hair comes off for good cause

Events across the Myall Coast last week raised thousands of dollars towards the Leukaemia Foundation in the Worlds Greatest Shave.

Abigroup Contractors hosted an event on Friday to encourage as many workers as possible to shave their heads for the cause.

Forty-two heads were shaved and coloured and along with other events $10,098 was raised.

Superintendent Robby Curtis took to the challenge and auctioned off his locks to raise $4355.

Local hairdressers Alicia Green and Katie Robards from Liarne’s Hair and Beauty in Bulahdelah volunteered their time for the event.

Abigroup always pick a number of charities to support throughout a project.

“The whole team is supporting the Leukaemia Foundation,” project manager Steve Kiddle said.

Another event on Saturday saw Angie Gimbert from Silk Hairdressing in Tea Gardens get out her clippers and razors to shave Rebecca Ward’s hair.

Ms Ward took up the challenge after she saw what her sister went through when she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia last year.

Ms Ward’s sister Kim Puller visited the doctor because she was felling run down and had a cough.

She was put into intensive care and given a blood transfusion that night before being flown to the Newcastle Mater Hospital.

“It was a lot to deal with in a few days, especially for Kim but also for her husband, five kids, friends and family,” Ms Ward said.

Raising $12,385 for the foundation Ms Ward said everyone had been really supportive of her.

“Even the people who least can afford it are really generous,” Ms Ward said.

Shave for a Cure raises money towards helping researchers find better treatments and cures as well as helping the foundation provide assistance to leukaemia suffers and their families.
