Hawks Nest tennants bunker down

25 Jan, 2012 01:00 AM
EXCESSIVE alcohol consumption, music blaring from cars, abusive language and burnouts in and near Bennetts Beach car park have been blamed for ruining a family's holiday to Hawks Nest.

Brett Watson, who stayed opposite Bennetts Beach, said he and his family enjoyed the location by day but it became an "utmost disappointment" at night.

"I have three children from 11 to 17 years old and all of them were afraid to go out after dark," he said.

Mr Watson said other tenants he spoke to were also fed up and "bunkered down at night".

The claims were supported by real estates in the area with a spokeswoman from Hawks Nest First National Real Estate saying the ongoing problem could cause some visitors not to rebook.

Rick Wraight of Tea Gardens Real Estate said the behaviour started about 15 years ago when the car park was expanded suggested to Great Lakes Council that the installation of speed bumps in the area would help the problem.

Mr Watson said a lack of police presence in the area was to blame.

At the moment the Tea Gardens Police Station is manned by one senior constable, after one officer stationed at Pindimar left in April 2011, and when he is off duty the Port Stephens Command was responsible for the area.

But Mr Watson said the response from the Port Stephens command was sub standard after he saw a patrol car at about 6pm - much earlier than when the trouble occurred.

Port Stephens Police Inspector Brian Larkham confirmed the Port Stephens Command was considering permanently stationing another senior constable at Tea Gardens.

Mr Watson suggested paying a surcharge on top of accommodation to cover the cost of a security guard at Bennetts Beach.
