Head-start on career decision for students

17 Dec, 2008 09:02 AM
YEAR five and six students at Tea Gardens Public School had a head-start on choosing their careers recently.

Nine retired and working members of the community spoke to the students about their chosen careers during a Myall Coast Rotary run Careers Awareness Program.

Students heard from an ambulance officer, licensed real estate agent, engineer, journalist, hairdresser, police officer, nursing sister, traveller and about employer expectations and work ethics.

“We had talked about doing this at different times but it never eventuated and this time we knew Rotary was keen,” Tea Gardens Public School principal Sue Estens said.

The workshop was incorporated into the annual public speaking competition, held for students in years five and six.

This year the students had to write and research about their dream job, before presenting it to their class.

Some students then got to hear first hand what their chosen careers would be like.

Ms Estens said she hopes to make the program an annual event.
