PUBLIC concern demonstrated in 'Letters to the Editor', at public forums and in the recent Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens Progress Association Survey, at the loss of our historical buildings and considerable changes to our local environment, set the stage for the formation of a Historical Society.
As reported in last week's NOTA, a well-attended public meeting was held and the need for the formation of a Historical Society was voted on unanimously.
In keeping with the statement of committee chairman, Trevor Cook, "It's time to stop talking and start doing," the seven person committee held their Inaugural meeting on Wednesday, March 22, at the CTC.
Discussion took place on the aims and objectives of the Society, the preparation of the Constitution, the name of the Society, the collections management policy, finances and a timetable of implementation.
The next meeting of the committee is set for Wednesday, April 5.
It is hoped that the Steering Committee can complete their phase of the process in time for a public meeting to be called in May.
At that meeting, the Constitution will be presented for acceptance, office bearers will be elected and the Society can then proceed to incorporation.
Further developments will be announced in this newspaper.
