FORSTER’S John Keep will enter the political arena when he contests the Great Lakes Council elections next month.
Mr Keep, who lost his vision to glaucoma in 2004, walks with the aid of his guide dog Rubin. He will run as an independent in the same group as current councillor Len Roberts.
“You could say I have a vision for council and an opportunity to bring a fresh perspective to looking at the needs of the community,” he said.
Before losing his sight Mr Keep was involved in banking and retail management, and owned a furniture business in Taree.
“Although I am no longer able to be involved in some things I used to do, my life has taken a different direction. I am more involved in advocating for the disabled and elderly,” he said.
“I am the local representative on the Vision Australia board and the council’s Access Committee. I realised I can do even more for those whose voices are overlooked and decided to give council a go.”
Mr Keep said he leads an active life - he sails, surfs and with the aid of technology, can ride a motorbike. He is confident Cr Roberts has the area’s best interests at heart.
“On the Access Committee I came to know Cr Len Roberts quite well, and realised we needed more people like him on council,” Mr Keep said.
“He not only listens but is prepared to suffer unjust criticism to ensure things are done right. He suggested I run for council and after talking it over with my family, I thought I would give it a go and try to make a difference”.
Cr Roberts said Mr Keep’s candidacy is a boost to his group.
“I am really honoured that John has decided to join our team. Council can only benefit with people of John’s calibre, attitude and integrity,” he said.
“Not only will he make a great councillor, but he’ll be a great advocate for those needed little changes we so often take for granted.”
