THE spirit of Christmas is alive within the Tea Gardens Public School Junior Red Cross group. Students entertained residents of the Myall Lodge and members of the Myall Dolphins in two separate Christmas concerts during December.
“It is a lovely mix of the young and old and the older members love seeing the kids perform,” Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Centre Based Respite team leader Jane Burrage-Swift said.
Myall Lodge village manager Lorraine Steers said the concert organised by the students was ‘amazing’.
“The young kids come here and perform and it is a nice lift for (the residents).
“To have the interaction with any community group makes them feel uplifted and part of the community,” Ms Steers said.
Junior Red Cross members organised their own dance and singing routines.
“The youngest in the community meet the oldest in the community and they have something to share,” Junior Red Cross organiser Carol Andrews said.
Throughout the year the students raise money to buy Christmas presents for the residents and dolphin members by organising various salls.
“There is a link here which wouldn’t normally happen, but we are able to bridge the gap,” Ms Andrews said.
A number of Senior Red Cross ladies are also involved with volunteering at Myall Dolphin meetings and Jane said it was great for them to see the students out in the community.
“The Red Cross ladies support us 100 per cent in whatever we do,” Ms Andrews said.
Over the year Junior Red Cross members have helped students in drought stricken areas by providing pencil cases and have also raised money for koala food trees and possum boxes in the local area.
