Kids raise pedal power for charity

10 Sep, 2009 10:19 AM
ONE teacher, 12 students, 12 pushbikes, 300km, eight days and two support crews – you do the math. Bulahdelah Central School’s Peter Kershaw has weighed up the figures. Why wouldn’t he? It’s his job - he’s a maths teacher, and has decided a 300km charity bike ride is achievable. After reading about the efforts of a NSW School that took students on a ride over several hundred kilometres Mr Kershaw decided he could do the same. Gathering a dozen willing students aged from 12 to 17 he set about negotiating the logistics of the ride.

“We’ll be riding over the Barrington Tops, it’s going to be tough but we’ll get there.”

Support crews, including a group of willing parents and the school’s mini bus will be on hand for the expected flat tyres, blisters and sore derrieres.

Twelve-year-old Megan Terry is one of the group’s youngest rides and says she looks forward to hitting the road.

“It’s very exciting because we are representing the school.”

Meagan and the other riders will have some much needed rest each night at camping spots along the way.

“It will be a little bit tough up and down hills and especially in the wet,” she said.

The group will head out on their ride during the first week of term four next month with all money raised being donated to Stewart Houses and Father Chris Riley’s Kids off the Street program.
