GREAT Lakes Council now has 11 councillors following the resignation of Cr Lynette Lawry on June 30.
Cr Lawry contacted council's acting general manager, Glenn Handford by email on Friday, June 30 and tendered her resignation, which she said was effective immediately.
No other reason for her resignation was given.
She then signed a copy of the resignation notice the next day.
Last week Ms Lawry issued a statement to media outlining the reasons for her resignation.
"I must be honest, I am extremely frustrated at the accumulating inconsistencies and injustices within Great Lakes Council," Ms Lawry said.
"I believe that members of the public who attend council meetings saw that I was the only true independent councillor.
"I care about people more than political parties.
"I feel it is imperative that elected councillors put people before allegiance to a political party."
A Bulahdelah resident, Cr Lawry was elected to council in September 1999.
Local Government Minister Kerry Hickey signed off recently on council's decision to reduce its councillor numbers from 12 to nine at the 2008 election.
As a result of the decision, any councillor who resigns or dies in office prior to the 2008 council election will not be replaced.
Great Lakes Council mayor John Chadban told the NOTA he was not aware of the issues that compelled Cr Lawry to make her decision.
"I am very disappointed in her comment regarding the injustices she claims she has been subjected to on council," Cr Chadban said.
"All the councillors work assiduously together to fulfil the obligations the position of councillor entails.
"It will be difficult, frustrating and stressful at times, but if you are not up to it you should not be there."
Cr Chadban also refuted Ms Lawry's claim that she was the only true independent councillor.
"Anyone who is familiar with council's operations would disagree with that claim," he said.
