Liquor accord promotes alcohol responsibility

30 Apr, 2008 10:07 AM
The Port Stephens Liquor Accord played a pivotal role in the preparation for Anzac Day last week.

The accord has been successful in curbing irresponsible alcohol-related behaviour since it was formed in November 2004.

“I think this year’s Anzac Day will present a particular challenge to licensees as it falls on a Friday. However, if our previous two years are any guide we will have a hugely successful day that is relatively incident free,” accord chairman Noel Jackson said.

“By asking licensees to curb the hours that two-up is played to between 2pm and 5pm, we have been very successful in keeping venues calm and friendly,” Mr Jackson said.

“Educating the public as to their responsibilities on the day is also a key part of our role.”

The accord covers all licensed premises in Raymond Terrace, Medowie, Salt Ash, Tilligerry, Karuah, Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest. The aim of the accord is to deal pro-actively with issues through education of staff and the public and the collective responsibility of liquor accord members.

As part of its proactive approach, the liquor accord will be holding a staff training workshop on Tuesday, May 13, at Pacific Dunes after the idea came from one of the licensees.

“It was suggested at a recent liquor accord meeting we hold a training day so some of the younger and less experienced staff could learn more about why RSA training is so vital,” Mr Jackson said.

“We have invited sporting bodies who serve liquor to come along and join up on the day as their membership is free.”
