TEA Gardens ambulance officer, Jim Arneman, was last week endorsed unopposed as Labor's candidate for Port Stephens.
Mr Arneman lives in the area with his wife, Karen, who is also an ambulance officer.
"As an ambulance officer, I'm particularly concerned about making sure our health system delivers for local working families," Mr Arneman said.
"Working as an ambulance officer for the past 21 years, it has been an honour to help people in need and play a part in helping save lives.
"It is an honour and a privilege to be part of Morris Iemma's team and I look forward to the challenge of helping local working families get their fair share," he said.
Mr Arneman said he would be seeking urgent meetings with the Minister for Police regarding crime in the area and with the Minister for Fisheries regarding the marine park.
"Our frontline police do a fantastic job, but local families I've spoken to tell me that they are becoming increasingly concerned about the level of youth crime in the area.
"It is a complex issue, but I'll be working with the Iemma Government on a plan to tackle the problem."
