Having served the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest community for over 28 years Dr Ian Everett is retiring after suffering a stroke.
Dr Everett’s long association with Tea Gardens Hawks Nest began during the 1960s when he came to the area on holidays.
His association saw a temporary retirement in 2001 after having heart surgery which was complicated by a staph infection.
In December 2003 he opened a surgery in Booner St, Hawks Nest, which quickly became popular with his previous patients and many of the newcomers to the area.
With a long and interesting medical history few would know that Dr Everett specialised in anaesthetics and was one of five anaesthesiologist practitioners in NSW.
Based at Balmain Hospital Dr Everett’s skills were put to great use in this busy hospital.
In 1980 Dr Everett decided that a sea change was required and packed his bags for Hawks Nest.
His idea of a quieter practice with patients that he would get to know rather than the fast pace and quick entrance and exit of patients in a hospital became a reality.
His practice quickly grew as the population of the area increased and he was pleased to welcome Dr Bruce Pearson who started his own practice in Hawks Nest next door to Dr Everett’s surgery.
Dr Everett’s compassion, caring and his gentle manner towards his patients will be sadly missed by many.
He has the unmistakable characteristics of the old fashioned country doctor and was always available for after hours calls.
He is loved by young and old for his patient and kind attitude towards everyone
Bundy, Dr Everett’s faithful Labrador was a constant reminder of the old fashioned attitude to treating patients.
Her greeting at the door to patients made many people feel just that little bit better and she was a source of pleasure for the children.
Dr Everett apologises for his unexpected and early retirement and asks that patients collect their files within the next month as the surgery has been officially closed this week.
He wishes to thank all those who have sent good wishes to him.
For those who know and love him this is the end to an era of sorts and we can only hope that he enjoys many wonderful days of reading his amazing collection of antique books and is able to continue with a spot of bird watching (the flying kind).
