Local inventor shines on world stage

Local inventor Andrew French has been recognised for the Magnetic Drive invention by winning the 30th annual international trophy for Technology and Quality.

In order to reflect its exclusivity in its 30th year the trophy awarded to Mr French will be named the Golden Trophy for Technology and Quality – New Millennium Award.

Director and inventor of Magnetic Gearing and Turbine, Mr French launched the Magnetic Drive to the world on January 1, 2000.

Mr French was nominated for this most recent award after showcasing the drive in the world’s largest industry tradeshow held early last year in Germany.

He was then invited to attend the presentation in France during March.

“Best thing we have ever won,” Mr French said.

The prize recognises companies that give priority to improvements in technological quality and development in the production process.

The Magnetic Drive was designed to replace belts, pulleys and other traditional power systems and to be used in couplings in order to join two objects together.

It allows a frictionless power transmission with belts and pulleys no longer required to make the device function.

“The invention revolutionises the way things are done,” Mr French said.

“There is no loss to friction; it allows smaller motors with less power and a pump to function at the same speed,” Andrew said.

Tests have recently been carried out on the Magnetic Disk in the Netherlands.

The test results for the disk are so close to the 100 percent mark testers were unable to be calibrated finer.

Mr French created a magnetic disk in the late 1990’s at Millennium Park near North Arm Cove.

The disk is now available worldwide with production in China and distribution in Australia, Europe and America.

Mr French is also recognised for his technology used in solar water pumps which are currently being used in South Africa.

The pump in the solar water pumps are driven with a ratio that delivers more water than a direct drive.

By using the solar water pump there is a gear reduction which allows a smaller motor to be used which generates less power while allowing the pump to continue turning at the same speed as with a larger motor.

Mr French also invented Polar Technology, a way to create snow in an environment above zero degrees using all natural methods.
