A BUSHFIRE on private land and in adjoining state forest in Stoney Creek Rd, Markwell (near Bulahdelah) is estimated to have burnt out in the vicinity of 485 hectares.

The fire started on Wednesday on private land, however the cause of the fire is yet to be established.

Fanned by strong winds the blaze quickly spread with firefighters from the NSW Rural Fire Service and State Forests attempting to bring it under control.

Brigades from Markwell, Bulahdelah, Wootton, Bunyah, Limeburners Creek, Tea Gardens, Coomba Park, Pacific Palms and Tuncurry all helped fight the fire which was brought under control late on Thursday afternoon when the crews finished putting in containment lines.

Thursday evening and the small hours of Friday morning saw the firefighters blacking out the fire which was on patrol status by Friday.
