Masters break national record

05 Mar, 2009 08:38 AM
THE Myall Masters made a splash at the recent Cessnock swim meet with most of the team finishing in the top three placing’s of several events.

Leon Bobako set the standard for the day breaking a national record in the 50m breastroke.

With the upcoming World Masters Games being held in Sydney this October, the national record is a boost to Leon’s training focus. Leon also won all four of his individual events.

John Coles made his competitive debut with the club, gaining second place in the 1500m freestyle, a deserving reward for his regular drive from Smiths Lake to Tea Gardens for training nights.

Club stalwart, Peter Kendall, swam strongly to be placed first in the 75-79 years, 400m freestyle.

The meet gave three Myall members John Coles, Trevor Shorten and Ali Harrison their first taste of Masters swimming competition. Ali surprised herself by winning the 50m backstroke.

Col Bertram, team manager for the day, seemed to be having lots of coffee and biscuits, such is the pressure of management.

The team entered two relay teams, the 4 x 50m freestyle 280 years plus and the 200-239 years mixed freestyle. Myall Masters won both events.

The annual meet attracted swimmers from 25 clubs.

The club’s 100m specialists were disappointed when the 100m freestyle event was cancelled due to a storm.

A superb effort by all Myall competitors contributed strongly to the club’s point score.

A great sausage sizzle was held after a hard training session on February 23, with a gathering of over 40 members and partners.

The Club helped Coach Leon celebrate his 60th birthday and congratulated him on setting a national record.

The next interclub meet will be held at the Olympic Pool at Homebush on March 28 to 29.
