Mural adds life to the club

THERE is a bright new addition to the wall at the Hawks Nest Surf Club thanks to the artistic flare of local residents, aided by the help of artist Jen Nichols.

To celebrate Youth Week and Seniors Week last year, Great Lakes Council collaborated with the local artist to design and co-ordinate a mural project at the Hawks Nest Surf Club.

“We wanted to have a sea side theme to match the location of the surf club. We decided to have several panels, around 20 or so, to give people a chance to paint a whole panel themselves rather than having one huge mural,” Jen said.

“We tried to keep it nice and bright because the original wall was quiet dull.”

The project took 40 people just one day to paint on April 13 last year and each panel was painted at the surf club by a combination of locals and visitors to the area ranging from six years old to 82 years old. Jen said the day was a great success and gave youth people and seniors the opportunity to work together.

“The weather was superb and it was a perfect location for creative expression.”
