TOURISM in the Myall Lakes is set to benefit as a result of a $25,000 grant from the Department of State and Regional Development.
Announcing the funding, NSW Minister for Regional Development, David Campbell said the State Government grant is from its Main Street/Small Towns Program and will help the Myall Waterways Chamber of Commerce and Tourism develop its 2007 and 2008 events program for Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest.
Myall Waterways Chamber of Commerce and Tourism president Lee Anderson said the funds would be used to help develop annual events and in turn promote tourism, especially during the off-peak seasons, creating more local employment and business.
"The chamber is working hard to encourage the region's growth," Ms Anderson said.
"There is a lot more to do but we are getting on with the job of encouraging investment and growth.
"The chamber's annual events program aims to grow two signature events, Walk on the Wild Side at Hawks Nest and the Myall River Festival at Tea Gardens."
Ms Anderson said the Walk on the Wild Side event has helped to open doors for local business by attracting visitors with an interest in the environment, koalas, bird watching and wild flowers.
She added that the Myall River Festival has proven popular with tourists wanting to sample local produce and those interested in arts and crafts.
"The timing of these two events will help boost trade during the traditional slow period," Ms Anderson said.
NSW Government support for the two events will be used for coordination and administration over the next two years, making them sustainable over the long term Mr Campbell said.
"The State Government funding will also help the chamber with its plans for marketing, advertising and consultant fees for business workshops," he said.
