ARE you ready to experience the challenge of paddling the Myall River from Tea Gardens to Mungo Brush in the Myall Lakes?
If so, then the Paddle for Life Myall River Classic is the event for you.
With three distances of 47km, 24km and 12km, with a number of race categories, the day caters for all levels of kayak enthusiasts, from the humble beginner to the experienced paddler.
So come along on Saturday, September 9 and join in a weekend of racing and family fun.
Hosted by Just Paddlers Kayak Club Inc, this event proudly supports the Cure for Life Foundation, advancing brain tumour treatment and research.
The race starts on the Myall River at Tea Gardens and meanders through the town, continuing through subtropical vegetation and mangroves to the Myall Lakes National Park, before returning to Tea Gardens.
The Myall River Classic was first held in 2003, raising in excess of $10,000 for the Cure for Life Foundation and catering for 120 entrants.
The second year raised just over $10,000 for the cause, with 164 competitors.
Last year the event was cancelled at the last minute due to inclement weather, however $5,000 was still raised for the Cure for Life Foundation thanks to competitors donating their entry fees and not wanting them refunded.
Race coordinator, Mike Eggleton believes the Paddle for Life Myall River Classic is beneficial to the local area, as many visitors come along on the day to enter the race and a lot of them linger for the weekend as well, which is great for local businesses.
"This introduces visitors to the area and showcases what it has to offer, enticing them to visit again for a future holiday or weekend," he said.
"We have brochures in all the kayak and outdoor shops in Sydney, as well as within every canoe club in NSW."
The races commence at 9am for the 47km, 9.10am for the 24km and around 9.20am for the 12km, starting at the park next to the Maritime office, Tea Gardens. All boats are to be off the river by 4pm.
There are different divisions of races in all three distances, the Ladies, Men's, Juniors and Veterans, (50 years and over), in Singles, Doubles and the K4 Cup.
All entrants who finish their race receive a medallion especially made for the event and a certificate showing their name and race time. Major place getters receive a trophy.
If anyone can help out with a safety boat on the day please call race coordinator, Mike Eggleton on 0417 533 559 ASAP.
