EIGHT past and present members of the Bulahdelah Volunteer Rescue Squad (VRA) have received a National Service Medal.
Myall Lakes MP John Turner presented the medals in a small ceremony on Saturday, November 29.
Past members Barry Johnston, Kevin Tyrrell, Dwane Johnston and Carole Johnson and present members Peter Mostyn, Graham Chapman, Max Pinkerton and Debbie Crampton were awarded the medals for over 15 years of service to the squad.
Present members were also awarded the VRA medal for their service in the past 10 years, since 1988.
“It is hard to hold organisations together like yours in a small town; those medals represent the work you have done in your community over the years,” Mr Turner said.
The National Service Medal is awarded to all members of services and the military at 15 years.
“The VRA wasn’t eligible for medals a few years ago but a bit of lobbying to the government made it happen,” award recipient Graham Chapman said.
Current member and Mid North Coast regional coordinator Peter Mostyn lobbied the federal government as part of the VRA executive committee to receive a national medal.
“Every other agency was recognised but the VRA wasn’t; it was just that no one had ever applied for it,” Mr Mostyn said.
While this an achievement for current members, Mr Mostyn said the squad was desperate for new volunteers, with only five on the books.
“We have lost a few members recently due to work, we really need more members at the moment,” Mr Mostyn said.
