New facilities officially opened

28 Aug, 2008 08:53 AM
STUDENTS, members of the community and dignitaries gathered on Friday to celebrate the official opening of the new facilities at Bulahdelah Central School.

Four years in the making the facilities give students up-to-date equipment and technology through new classrooms, a science block, gymnasium, outdoor learning area and art centre.

Principal Robert Brenton recognised the contribution of his predecessor ex-principal David Benson.

“Under his guidance the school council was reformed in 2001 to help promote and push for the new facilities,” Mr Brenton said.

In each of the official speeches the students and teachers were commended on putting up with the development.

“Over the four years there has been destruction and discomfort for students and teachers but we have had no grievances only cooperation,” Mr Brenton said.

Traditional land owners were recognised with a welcome to country by Pauline Syron.

Ms Syron is the state’s first female Aboriginal school captain.

She carried out her position during 1988 at Bulahdelah Central School.

Performances from year 12 HSC music students Jake Longworth and Stacey Gregory and the Myall Learning Community Choir and school ensemble put the focus back onto the students who would benefit from the new facilities.

“These outstanding facilities will help ensure all students at Bulahdelah Central School are encouraged to realise their full potential and attain their goals,” NSW senator Michael Forshaw said.

Myall Lakes NSW Labor Duty MLC Lynda Voltz and Mr Forshaw were present to officially unveil the plaque and open the new area.

A home is yet to be found for the plaque, but it will be placed within the new building complex.

After the proceedings guests were invited to tour the new facilities.

“The school now features excellent venues for physical education, visual arts, dance, music, academic, general and special education,” Ms Voltz said.

The students are already making use of the new facilities with classes starting in the buildings upon completion recently.
