A NEW task force has been established to help tackle the ongoing blockage of the Myall River's eastern channel.
The taskforce will be made up of government departments including Great Lakes Council, fisheries, crown lands, maritime as well as Paterson MP Bob Baldwin and Dr Philip Haines who carried out the study into the blockage for the government and the council.
The announcement of the taskforce was made last week by Port Stephens MP Craig Baumann after he and the Minister for Primary Industries Katrina Hodgkinson held a meeting to discuss emergency funding for the river.
He described the river's blockage as "probably the biggest issue in the electorate right now".
"This is a serious issue for tourism, for the oyster farmers and for the health of the river," he said.
"We need to get all the decision makers together to make sure what we're doing is spot on."
The Myall River Action Group told the Nota it was pleased to hear the news but was hoping the new group would act quickly.
"Whilst we welcome this as a positive step we sincerely hope that the taskforce's decision making doesn't take too long as this campaign is now in its fourth year," Myall River spokesman Gordon Grainger said.
Mr Baumann said the minister was well aware of the urgency and has promised all speed would be taken.
"I think things will move reasonably quickly when the task force gets together," he said.
Great Lakes Council agreed in September that the best option would be a $3 million plan to permanently dredge the Myall River's eastern channel and move the sand via a sand shifter to renourish the eroding Jimmys Beach.
