MYALL Lakes MP John Turner has called upon the Minister for Roads, Joe Tripodi to inform the people of North Arm Cove, Carrington and Tahlee exactly what is planned for their access to Karuah as part of the Pacific Highway upgrade.
"Nearly two years ago I was informed by the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) that residents from those areas would be able to access Karuah, a service centre for their community, without being required to enter the clearly inadequate intersection that is currently being planned with the Pacific Highway," Mr Turner said.
"I was told residents would be able to use the old Pacific Highway with a small section of only some hundreds of metres needed to be constructed to make a direct route to Karuah."
Mr Turner said the North Arm Cove, Carrington and Tahlee residents are naturally fearful of being obliged to enter intersections coming from North Arm Cove and Karuah where traffic is streaming at 100 kmh.
"After letters to the Minister without satisfactory answers I raised the issue of the safe, separate access in a question in the Parliament," said Mr Turner.
"The reply was: 'The proposal remains an option.'
"Surely after two years, not to mention the decades of planning for the upgrade of the Pacific Highway something more concrete than ‘The proposal remains an option' would be more appropriate.
"It clearly casts concern on the government and planning process.
"The direct access concept should be implemented. It is safe and sensible, but we have seen just up the road, at the intersection of the Pacific Highway and Myall Way that the safe and sensible approach by the Minister isn't an option."
