WORK is almost finished on a new children’s playground at the day park within Jimmys Beach Caravan Park.
But not everyone is happy.
David Halliwell who leased a holiday van site in Jimmy’s Beach Caravan Park said work on the playground should not be able to go ahead until Great Lakes Council’s plan of management for park upgrades is approved.
Earlier this year council announced major upgrades to the park including a significant reduction to the holiday van sites.
People who had leased the sites, some for over 30 years, have been given the option to either pack up and leave or go into a ballot in hope of securing one of the few remaining sites once the plan of management is approved.
While Mr Halliwell acknowledged that the construction of the new playground may seem trivial, he said the fact that it was included under the plan of management should mean that council have to follow the same procedure.
Great Lakes Council’s manager parks and recreation David Bortfeld said a $22,000 federal grant to fund the upgrade was secured in September last year and must be spent by the end of the month.
“This fact, along with recognising the community has been without a facility for some time provided the drive to bring this playground to the public in the shortest possible time frame. We were also aware of the up coming school holidays and how popular this site is during those periods,” Mr Bortfeld said.
Mr Bortfeld said Jimmy’s Beach Day area, along with a number of other public reserves in the area, are managed under an existing plan of management which allows for any necessary redevelopment to meet the growing needs of the community.
“The provision of a new playground for the community was desperately needed and overdue. This addition to the park and the opportunities it provides to the local community and visitors is seen as a positive for the area,” he said.
