Police an issue

NSW Opposition Leader Barry O’Farrell and the Shadow Cabinet met in the Hunter recently to discuss local issues.

“Port Stephens MP Craig Baumann and our Hunter-based MPs have been keen for me to bring the Shadow Cabinet to Port Stephens and the Hunter for a meeting to hear community concerns firsthand,” Mr O’Farrell said.

One of the items at the top of the agenda was policing in Port Stephens.

“It is a constant concern for the people of Port Stephens and one I hear every time I visit the region.

“The community wants high visibility policing and they simply aren’t getting it from the Iemma Labor Government,” Mr O’Farrell said.

Police minister David Campbell has not confirmed whether he will honour John Watkins’ pre election commitment of a new local area command for Port Stephens.

“It’s now approaching twelve months since the state election and the clock is ticking. The NSW Opposition will maintain the pressure on Mr Campbell. He should do it now,” Mr O’Farrell said.

“Police who serve the Hunter are crying out for additional resources and so far their pleas are falling on deaf ears.”

Mr Baumann thanked Mr O’Farrell and the Shadow Cabinet for visiting the region.

“When Iemma Labor Government Ministers visit this region, it’s either to make a promise, or to break one but the NSW Opposition came here today to listen to the community,” Mr Baumann said.

“The community’s message is clear.

“Action needs to be taken immediately before angry, concerned residents reach breaking point. I’m very proud my colleagues in the NSW Opposition are committed to solving this problem,” Mr Baumann said.
