Port Stephens in danger

12 Mar, 2008 02:42 PM
A RECENT study has found the Port Stephens foreshore is in danger of being destroyed if the numbers of residents and tourists using the waterways continues to increase.

Living on the Edge, a foreshore management plan for Port Stephens, has been conducted by environmental consultants Umwelt.

The study states “a detailed long term planning guide is required to ensure the unique values of the estuary and its foreshore are protected for future generations, while at the same time maintaining a robust economy and vibrant growing community.”

The report looks at the 250km to the north, south and west of the tidal mouth of the river, the foreshores of the tributaries and creeks that flow into the main river and the foreshores of the Karuah River and Myall River up to Kangaroo Island.

Tea Gardens foreshore has been included in the report with the suggestion that a larger marina be built in the future to house the increasing number of boats using the river.

There are only two small boat sheds on the water that can only accommodate a small number of vessels each.

The amount of space for private moorings on the river is also decreasing with a greater number of boats being brought into Tea Gardens Hawks Nest.

“We do need a marina and have done for a number of years,” aquatic club member Bede Bright said.

“But there is insufficient room for more private moorings on the river,” Mr Bright said.

Tony Woodfield from the NSW Maritime Authority in Tea Gardens told the Nota around 25 names are on a waiting list for people wanting a private mooring on the river.

The list includes both people who want swing moorings and pole moorings.

In the meantime it is recommended that improvements be undertaken to the boat ramps and jetties at Tea Gardens, Winda Woppa and Hawks Nest.

The Port Stephens Foreshore Management Plan will be on display until May 26 or you can view it at www.portstephens.nsw.gov.au.
