Protecting our surf lifesavers

15 Jan, 2007 02:31 PM
A SURF Lifesaving Act will be enacted by a Liberal/National Government to give public liability protection to volunteer surf lifesavers.

Nationals Member for Myall Lakes, John Turner, said the Liberal/National Coalition recognise the vital work our lifesaving members undertake.

"The Surf Lifesaving Act will give volunteer professional lifesavers support and recognition as an emergency service," Mr Turner said.

"At present lifesavers often have to pay for their own insurance just so they can protect us at the beach.

"Our Act would ensure the burden of public liability insurance for surf lifesavers is covered by Treasury and not by individuals or clubs," he said.

"Surf lifesavers in the Myall Lakes Electorate, indeed right across NSW, are incredibly professional and dedicated - they deserve State Government backing through their own Act."

Mr Turner believes that although volunteers in the Rural Fire Service and the State Emergency Service are already covered under legislation, surf lifesavers should be added to the list.

"Recognising Surf Lifesaving as an Emergency Service would provide greater access to funding for the equipment and resources clubs and volunteers require to continue the vital work they do.

"This will in no way impinge on their ability to maintain their independence - it will simply offer them greater support.

"It would also allow the surf lifesaving movement representation on the State Rescue Board," he said.
