Great Lakes Council will start works on the programmed renourishment of Jimmy’s Beach in Hawks Nest.
The renourishment activities are designed to slow erosion and establish a management technique to mitigate the ongoing erosion of Jimmy’s Beach, adjacent to The Boulevard, Winda Woppa.
Initial works will start on Monday, February 11, and include the installation of the necessary pipe work to relocate sand from the Yaccaba Headland which will then be deposited in a systematic way along Jimmy’s Beach.
This pipe will be buried beneath the surface and cause minimal disturbance to the beach and the current users.
To provide ease of installation compounds will be erected in the reserve adjacent to Jimmy’s Beach Caravan Park and in the informal car park on the corner of The Boulevard and The Anchorage, Hawks Nest.
In addition to this, there will be construction machinery progressively moving along the beach during the installation phase.
Disruptions to these sites should be kept to a minimum of three weeks.
The second stage of this initial campaign will be the actual renourishment of the beach.
This will require the installation of a dredge and transfer station on the fore dune of the beach.
Dredging equipment will be placed at the headland with a transfer station to be located approximately half way between the sand spit and the renourishment area along The Boulevard.
These works should start in late April and take approximately 12 weeks.
This renourishment campaign will create minor disruptions for the existing beach users.
These distrubtions will be primarily along The Boulevard and directly at the Yaccaba Headland sand spit.
“These works have been a long time coming and a much needed solution to the existing problem,” parks and recreation manager David Bortfeld said.
“Council is committed to this project and through financial assistance from the State Government we can actually commence,” Mr Bortfeld said.
