Replacement sand washed away, again

21 Oct, 2009 09:58 AM
A SHEER three metre drop has developed again on Jimmys Beach, weeks after the most recent stage of its renourishment project wrapped up.

A day of large swells earlier this month eroded some of the 32,000 cubic metres of sand pumped from Yacaaba Headland to shore up the beach and protect homes on the Boulevard.

Costing $180,000 this six week stage of the project was expected to hold up Jimmys Beach for 12 months.

Aside from questioning the environmental impacts of the renourishment, spokesperson for the Myall River Action Group Gordon Grainger said the beach now poses a safety risk.

“I stood at the edge of the three metre drop and it was concave underneath. That to me is a danger and it will be a magnet to kids.”

The renourishment will be one of seven topics discussed at a forum in Tea Gardens tonight, Wednesday October 21.

Other topics on the agenda will be the town’s foreshore, dredging of the eastern and western channels, the Myall River Study, DCP implementation, the Waste Transfer Station Update and the historically significant Universal Store.

“They’re extensive and certainly topical issues, but we need to hear council’s position on each and likewise council needs to hear the community’s thoughts as well,” Mr Grainger said.
