Riding to draw the tourists in

19 Dec, 2007 07:53 AM
Riding a push bike around town is a great way to experience what Tea Gardens Hawks Nest has to offer over the holidays.

It has just become a lot easier to know where the bicycle paths are and the best route to take to see the different attractions around the town.

A Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Cycling Experience booklet has been completed by the cycling committee for locals and tourists.

The cycling committee is a sub-committee of the Myall Waterways Chamber of Commerce and Tourism.

Local resident Adrian Ryan headed the committee that produced the booklets after coming up with the idea of promoting cycling during the quieter months of the year to draw tourists to the area.

Mr Ryan said the benefits of riding for local residents and tourists were exponential and the flat terrain and low traffic density made the area perfect for taking your bike.

Biking promotes healthy living and is an environmentally friendly way of getting around.

The routes printed in the book cater for people of all ages and all cycle groups from families to more serious riders.

The routes by-pass many of the attractions around Tea Gardens Hawks Nest and cover distances between 2.5km to 52km.

Five-hundred books have been printed and will be distributed to bicycle user groups throughout NSW, the books are available locally from the Tea Gardens Visitors Information Centre.

“During January the committee has proposed to organise a family ride for locals and visitors,” Mr Ryan said.

The ride will take them past the scenic and historic areas of the town.

The group is also investigating grants available to them so more cycle ways can be placed around the town.

Major developers in Tea Gardens Hawks Nest have also been approached to see what they can offer.

Mr Ryan is also a member of the Myall Peddlers, a local group that plans bike rides twice a week around the town.

The rides are broken into two levels of difficulty allowing riders of all different stages to enjoy this environmentally friendly sport.
