IT is that time of year again, rodeo fever has hit and Bulahdelah is due to host their annual junior rodeo on Sunday, July 9, 8am at the Bulahdelah Showground.
This will be closely followed by the Glowalman Championships held at Nabiac, Gloucester and Wingham over the second week in July.
Bulahdelah Junior Rodeo announcer, John Taylor, kicked off the idea for a junior rodeo to be held in Bulahdelah around 18 years ago.
Mr Taylor decided to start the event at Bulahdelah in order to coincide with the timing of the Glowalman Championships.
" We have around 15 to 20 local riders competing in the junior rodeos, and the point score of the Bulahdelah Junior Rodeo doesn't interfere with the Glowalman Championships at all," he explained.
Mr Taylor told the NOTA that the Bulahdelah Junior Rodeo attracts 200 to 220 competitors each year.
ABCRA rules apply in the campdraft section and the age of competitors range from eight to 21 years.
Sporting events are conducted and run in age groups.
"The sporting events don't have an age restriction, however there is no led class," explained Mr Taylor.
Sponsored by Country Energy, The Bulahdelah Junior Rodeo is a sporting and campdraft for all ages, as well as a great family day out. There is no gate charge and camping facilities, canteen and hot showers will be available.
The prizes are fantastic, with a Pointscore Champion Trophy for each age group, a belt buckle trophy valued at $100 for the winner of each campdraft, and ribbons and prize money to fifth place.
For campdraft entries phone 4997 4101 (ah), 4997 4752 (ah) or fax - 4997 4812. Limited stock is available and entries close on Tuesday, July 4.
Mr Taylor said that in the past few years numbers for the junior rodeo have dropped, and he believes it may be due to drought and the increasing price of fuel.
"We get horses from as far away as Queensland right down to the Victorian border," he said.
"It is a great spectacle and a fantastic week," he added.
The competitors camp at each showground as they travel from one rodeo to the next.
Following the Bulahdelah Junior Rodeo on Sunday, July 9, the Glowalman Championships kick off at Nabiac on Tuesday, July 11, Gloucester on Thursday, July 13, and come to a close at Wingham on Saturday, July 15. Spectators are more than welcome to attend the competitions.
Point scores for each age group are taken from each round in the different towns, and the first place getters battle it out for the 'Supreme Stock Rider' award, which takes place at Wingham, along with the presentation of all trophies and the grand parade.
"The grand parade is held at the last place of the championships, which this year is Wingham, and it is a fantastic sight to see," assured Mr Taylor.
