BULAHDELAH hosted their annual Junior Rodeo on Sunday, July 9 at the Bulahdelah Showground and once again, it was a resounding success.
This event was followed by the Glowalman Championships held at Nabiac, Gloucester and Wingham over the second week in July.
The competitors camped at each showground as they travelled from one rodeo to the next.
The Glowalman Championships came to a close at Wingham last Saturday, along with the presentation of all trophies and the grand parade.
17-year-old Emma Malone from Bulahdelah usually competes in the Junior Rodeo but was unable to do so this year due to an injury.
She was however an avid spectator and said the event ran smoothly and the cattle were good.
"We had a fairly big crowd considering entries are down at all rodeos at the moment due to the drought out west and the increasing price of fuel.
"The price of fuel makes it pretty expensive for a family to travel and compete in four rodeos, but we do get horses from as far away as Queensland right down to the Victorian border," said Emma.
Most of the spectators were local residents and the main spectators event was the teams draft at the end of the day. This event always attracts a large crowd.
Emma said they had 170 entries in the campdraft and about 10 Bulahdelah juniors competed in the rodeo, ranging from Under 11s to Under 21s. "We also had three competitors from Western Australia that came over for the rodeos via an exchange program.
"A few of our rodeo riders from NSW will go over there to compete in the Western Australia rodeos in November," she explained.
Emma told the NOTA that standout results included Bulahdelah rider, Steven Mason, who placed in the campdraft Under 15s.
The sporting events attract juniors of all ages, with the youngest competitors around four or five years old.
Emma said there were no accidents or injuries at the Bulahdelah Junior Rodeo this year.
"The ground was good and there were no falls.
"It was a nice day and the weather was perfect, as it usually rains," she said.
Doug Jamieson from the Tamworth area judged the campdraft and his daughter, Kristen Jamieson judged the stockrider.
