Sailors "irresponsible" attempt to reach Broughton Island

25 Jan, 2012 01:00 AM
THE actions of two brothers from Sydney have been labelled as "irresponsible for everyone involved" by a police officer after the pair went missing while trying to sail to Broughton Island in rough seas with no safety equipment.

On Friday, January 13 Tea Gardens Police and Port Stephens Water Police responded to the job after receiving a call from the brothers' concerned mother.

Tea Gardens Senior Constable David Coyle said the mother had been waiting for more than two hours on Jimmys Beach for her 15 year-old and 22-year-old sons to return from a short sail within the Bay on a three metre catamaran.

Mr Coyle said the water police located the two males outside the heads, halfway between Cabbage Tree Island and Broughton Island.

"It was an extremely windy day with a large swell and it was certainly not appropriate conditions to be sailing to Broughton Island," he said.

The boat had no safety equipment on board and was turned around and escorted back to Jimmys Beach.
