Scammers cut off your water

23 Oct, 2008 08:50 AM
Residents are being warned to be on the look out for bogus doorknockers after reports of people impersonating MidCoast Water employees in the area.

An incident was reported in which a customer was approached by someone who purported to be a MidCoast Water employee claiming their account had not been paid and their service was to be disconnected.

Similar scams have been occurring with other authorities.

“We’d just like to make it clear to our customers that we do not have employees’ doorknocking and asking for account payments,” MidCoast Water’s general manager Neil Hanington said.

Mr Hanington said all MidCoast Water employees have identification cards and residents with concerns should ask to see these cards.

If you are still unsure about the person contact the customer service line on 1300 133 455 to verify the person is a staff member or contact the police if you feel you are dealing with a scammer.
